Trial starts for man accused of abusing NYC carriage horse that had to be euthanized

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — The trial of a handler accused of abusing a New York City carriage horse, which eventually had to be euthanized, has begun.

Jury selection began in Manhattan Criminal Court in the case against the driver, Ian McKeever, 55, and is expected to continue on Tuesday. McKeever is charged with overdriving, torturing and injuring animals, and failure to provide proper sustenance, prosecutors said.

McKeever allegedly abused the carriage horse, Ryder, until the animal collapsed on a hot day in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood on Aug. 10. 2022, according to court records.
