New York City saw a significant decrease in major crime categories during Fiscal Year 2025, with some statistics reaching historic lows, according to the Mayor’s Management Report (MMR) released today. However, the report also detailed a notable increase in forcible rape incidents, attributed to a change in state law.
Data from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) indicates that major felonies, shootings, and murders have all seen significant declines. Murders fell below one per day for the first time since before the pandemic, and homicides in Manhattan dropped by 46% during this period. Overall, major felonies decreased by 5.7% compared to 2024, and the average response time for critical crimes in progress was reduced by 14 seconds.
The MMR highlights that subway crime is at record lows, even as ridership has grown. Overall transit crime from June 1 to August 31 was down nearly 10% from 2024. In August, robberies in the subway system were down 34%, and transit felony assaults were down 21% this summer compared to the same period in 2024.
