Church in Harlem offers free meals to families in need

HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) — In Harlem, part of a beloved church has been transformed into a free restaurant where there is no bill, only great food and community.

At the Refettorio in Harlem, people are served with the dignity of a five-star meal.

General manager Matt Sherman calls it “dignified dining,” and says the goal is for every person to walk away feeling loved and valued.

Chef Michael Lesser and a team of volunteers turn surplus produce from Baldor Specialty Foods into three-course meals and thousands of pounds of fresh groceries each week. Many of the servers and prep cooks are formerly incarcerated New Yorkers who are rebuilding their lives…
