NYC Sets 15 MPH Speed Limit for E-Bikes and E-Scooters

New York City will implement a 15 miles-per-hour speed limit for e-bikes, e-scooters, and pedal-assist commercial bicycles starting on October 24. Mayor Eric Adams announced the new rule, aligning it with the existing limit for stand-up e-scooters. The decision aims to enhance safety for both riders and pedestrians across the city.

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) adopted the rule, amending Sections 4-01 and 4-06 of the Traffic Rules to ensure consistency with the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. The new regulation comes amid a rise in collisions involving e-bikes, with 623 reported this year compared to 455 during the same period in 2024. However, e-bikes account for a small portion of the total crashes, which include over 12,700 involving cars.

Mayor Adams emphasized the importance of setting clear and consistent rules to protect everyone as more New Yorkers rely on e-bikes and e-scooters for transportation.
