Route 495 reopens in New Jersey after man hit, killed by car: officials

UNION CITY, N.J. (PIX11) – The westbound lanes of Route 495 in New Jersey reopened on Wednesday after being shut down for hours, according to Port Authority.

The closure came after a man was seen walking along the westbound side of Route 495 and was struck by a driver around 5:45 a.m., a representative for Port Authority told PIX11 News. The westbound lanes reopened as of 8:45 a.m., but drivers can still expect 30-minute delays.

The Lincoln Tunnel was still open despite 495’s shutdown, but cars were detoured onto John F. Kennedy Boulevard in Union City.

The inbound express bus lane on 495 was also closed. NJ Transit bus service to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan was diverted to Secaucus Junction and Newark Penn Station, the agency announced on X.
