Obscure ‘December’ law bans Christmas tree sales to Americans until specific date

CHRISTMAS trees have taken over New York City sidewalks long before Santa even packs his sleigh and it turns out many of those evergreens are technically illegal.

A little-known city rule, dating back to 1938, bans the sidewalk sale of Christmas trees until December.

But seasonal sellers have already flooded the city’s streets in November, ignoring the rarely-enforced law that was originally part of a crackdown on street vending.

Vendors like NYC Tree Lady, run by local tree-selling pro Heather Neville, reportedly opened all six of its outdoor stands, including spots on the Upper East Side and Astor Place, before Thanksgiving…
