A Republican New York City councilwoman with a history of Islamophobic remarks has called for the “expulsion of Muslims from western nations,” prompting condemnation from the city’s first Muslim mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani.
Vicki Paladino, a member of the New York City Council since 2021, is a staunch advocate for the state of Israel and has been outspoken about her opposition to the pro-Palestinian movement. She has also advocated for the deportation of Muslims from the U.S. In June, before the first mayoral debate, Paladino called for Mamdani’s deportation and referred to him as “a radical leftist who actually hates everything about the country and is here specifically to undermine everything we’ve ever been about.”
