Firefighter drove wrong way on NJ highway before deadly car crash

TOTOWA, N.J. (PIX11) — A firefighter was driving the wrong way down the I-80 when he died in a head-on car crash near Totowa early Monday morning, according to the Newark Public Safety Director.

Firefighter Albin Fermin had been with the Newark fire department since February 2024 and was assigned to Engine 10 before he died in the head-on collision near exit 54 around 2 a.m., Newark officials said.

Fermin had been driving the wrong way on the I-80 in his Honda sedan when he crashed into a Buick SUV driven by a 60-year-old with a 24-year-old and a 2-year-old passenger.

The firefighter died at the scene along with Imani Furman, the 24-year-old in the Buick SUV, New Jersey State Police reported. The 60-year-old also suffered serious injuries, while the 2-year-old child sustained moderate injuries…
