Lyndhurst police were dispatched at 11:22 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025, to 436 Valley Brook Ave., the Lyndhurst branch of the United States Post Office, on a report of a man who threw a lit cigarette into a mailbox, Police Capt. Paul Haggerty said.
The caller and an eyewitness described the suspect as a man wearing a yellow tracksuit who was seen walking west on Valley Brook Avenue, according to police.
When officers arrived, postal employees had already extinguished the fire and reported that the cigarette and two damaged pieces of mail remained inside the mailbox, Haggerty said…
