Lost History: The Book of Negros

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — To understand the significance of the Birch Trials and the “Book of Negroes,” it helps to first understand what ultimately amounted to a broken promise made in 1775, at the start of the Revolutionary War, by Lord Dunmore, then Royal Governor of Virginia, to any Black slave or indentured servant who was willing to take the chance of a lifetime.
