Op-Ed: Jersey City must get its financial house in order before expanding council staff

In an editorial, Jersey City resident Elvin Dominici Encarnación expresses his belief that the city must get their finances in order before expanding City Council staff.

The people of Jersey City just elected a new mayor who explicitly campaigned on affordability. The administration recently completed the most thorough and transparent audit of the city’s books that I have witnessed in over two decades living here.

It revealed that the city’s financial challenges are significant, with a projected budget deficit of around $254 million, which is roughly 28% of the city’s entire annual budget.

In light of this, our mayor has again demonstrated how seriously he is taking his affordability pledge; he has decided to take a $1 annual salary…
