A ‘surge in scams’ targeting Hudson County SNAP and WFNJ benefit recipients

A “surge in scams” has been targeting recipients of Hudson County Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Work First New Jersey (WFNJ) benefits in March, an official confirmed today.

“Hudson County has seen a surge in scams targeting SNAP and WFNJ benefit recipients at the point of sale. County staff are working to ensure no family goes hungry,” began County spokesman Mark Cygan said in an email following an inquiry for HCV.

He further stated that the the Hudson County Department of Family Services and Reintegration, along with the Department of Aging and Veterans Affairs, have delivered food to the families affected by the scams and will continue to do so.

Additionally, Cygan said that the “point of sale” element he referenced was scammers have placed skimming machines on sale devices so that the debit cards SNAP recipients utilize are compromised…
