The embarrassing reason Jersey City failed to clean up 9 inches of snow

Outdated, printed snow removal maps and routes from the 1990s were among the reasons why Jersey City streets were snarled for days after a fast-moving snowstorm in January, according to a city report.

Jersey City will be eliminating paper-based systems and developing up-to-date digital maps and routes that can be accessed online and via tablets by next winter, Mayor James Solomon said in response to the 21-page report he ordered that investigated what went wrong during the city’s handling of the storm.

Solomon, previously a member of the Jersey City Council, became mayor 10 days before the storm hit. Jersey City got around nine inches of snow, at rates reaching two inches per hour, during its biggest storm in a decade…
