Severe storms more likely from mid-afternoon through early evening

Kalamazoo, Michigan — Unfortunately, it will be another active afternoon for Live Doppler Radar and West Michigan.

Thunderstorms will quickly grow and organize after 2 or 3 p.m. This first batch may become strong with 40-50 mph gusts.

A second line forms in its wake after 5 or 6 p.m. It’s this line that will be capable of damaging winds, large hail, and a tornado or two.

The risks of damaging winds, the most likely outcome, have now been upgraded to 15% courtesy of the Storm Prediction Center. The corridor of concern stretches from southeast Cass county to Battle Creek to Charlotte and southeastward. This is just southeast of Kalamazoo. While large hail is less likely, the risk of large hail also increased to 15% from Kent county and southward. There is a large amount of spin or rotation in the lowest 3,000′ of the atmosphere. It is a potential reality that a tornado develops along a north-south line segment of storms from 5 to 7 p.m…
