Volunteers fill garbage bags with debris from the Kalamazoo River

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A bright and clear Saturday made for ideal weather to clear the Kalamazoo River of debris, just in time for the first day of summer.

The Rotary Club of Kalamazoo organized volunteers for the third year with the goal of restoring natural habitats and improving water quality in Kalamazoo, Comstock and Parchment.

Hundreds signed up for the effort, with some walking along the trails with garbage bags and trash pickers, and others traveling along the water in canoes to clear garbage from the bottom of the river.

Volunteers found books, garbage cans and clothing among the items scattered near the river, along with dangerous objects like knives and needles…
