Harper Creek Community Schools proposes $28M bond in August Primary

CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. — A bond proposal by Harper Creek Community Schools is aiming to make critical improvements across the district.

If approved by voters in Michigan’s Aug. 4 primary, the $28 million bond would “address the district’s highest priority facility needs,” all while keeping the debt millage rate the same as 2025, according to the district’s website.

Specifically, funding from the bond would be used for the following projects:

  • Four classrooms added to each of the district’s three elementary buildings
  • Currently empty pool at the middle school converted to classroom space
  • Safety film added to all first-floor windows, outdated classroom technology replaced, district-wide upgrade to technology
  • Infrastructure issues will be addressed, including replacement of the Beadle Lake Elementary playground and drainage upgrades at Sonoma Elementary
  • Traffic flow and parking improvements at Wattles Park Elementary, middle school and transportation parking lots, partial roof replacement at the high school

“This bond represents a shared commitment to educational excellence and community growth,” officials said online. “By investing now, Harper Creek addresses its highest priority facility needs while keeping costs predictable for local taxpayers. By law, bond funds cannot be used for employee salaries, repairs, maintenance, or other operating expenses. All proceeds go directly to the projects that voters approve.”
