KDPS chief says park event was not nuisance party, despite police action

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — More than a week after an unofficial community event was broken up by police, the chief of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said it should have been handled as a violation of park rules instead of a nuisance party ordinance violation.

On Monday, Kalamazoo City Commission met for the first time after a June 28 event called “Sunday Funday” at Spring Valley Park was broken up by police. Video circulating on social media shows a KDPS officer on a loudspeaker at the event saying the gathering had been “deemed a nuisance party.” Community members told commissioners that police cleared the park with commands over a loudspeaker and some officers carried large canisters of pepper spray.

Kalamazoo residents question how mobile nuisance ordinance is applied

On Tuesday, after a Monday night interview had been interrupted, KDPS Chief David Boysen told News 8 the “Sunday Funday” event has been growing in popularity and noise complaints.

“Most folks are just having a good time and not hurting anybody. So as long as we get compliance, that’s what we want. We really don’t want to have to do,” he said…
