State police arrest man in Battle Creek connected to 1993 Alaska cold case

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — State police made an arrest in a 1993 Alaska cold case on Thursday.

Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers said the Fifth District Fugitive Team arrested 54-year-old Christopher Popps on Thursday after Alaska State Troopers’ (AST) Cold Case Investigation Unit reached out for help regarding a homicide investigation.

AST troopers said Popps called them in January and admitted to murdering someone in the Fairbanks area in 1993.

In May, AST troopers went to where Popps said the body was left and found the remains of 34-years-old Patrick Orville Dearth, reported missing in November 1993, in a barrel down a steep embankment off the highway…
