For the eighth year, Michigan’s Freedom Trail Commission has recognized September as International Underground Railroad Month, bringing together gatherings of local historians across the state.
One such gathering was held at Kellogg Community College on Saturday, Sept. 12, with dozens of participants in attendance to learn about the Underground Railroad’s lasting legacy in Battle Creek.
The theme of this year’s Underground Railroad Heritage Gathering was “Battle Creek and Beyond,” referencing the area’s strong connections to the Underground Railroad network.
