Thousands of migrating purple martins roost in Kalamazoo

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — As birds across North American continue to migrate south for the winter, residents of Kalamazoo saw an unusual sight not far from downtown: thousands of migrating purple martins in a roost.

“These are birds that are heading for Brazil for the winter,” said Caleb Putnam, a West Michigan ornithologist. “We’re catching them right as they take off.”
