Kalamazoo to add two 24/7 downtown bathrooms

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The city of Kalamazoo is looking to add two 24/7 bathroom locations to the downtown area.

The city currently has one 24/7 public bathroom, located on Water Street across from Eleanor Street, along with seven other public bathrooms located inside various buildings that are not 24/7.

Plans are now underway to add a 24/7 bathroom on the corner of St. John Place and Lovell Street and another on South Street near the S Kalamazoo Mall. The latter is still under engineering review, the city told News 8. Both are in accessible locations that can easily be monitored.

“A team led by (Assistant City Manager Rebekah Kik) has been working to ensure we select the right locations; this includes making sure that not only utilities are available but that the locations also meet the needs of users and are universally accessible,” the city’s communications manager said in an email with News 8.

Like the first 24/7 location, both bathrooms will be Portland Loos , a single-stall, stand-alone bathroom first developed for Portland, Oregon. The city said it’s sticking with the brand due to the bathroom’s “performance, maintenance, and features.”
