Deputies: 1 injured in Walmart parking lot shooting

OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — One person was injured in a shooting in a Walmart parking lot in Oshtemo Township Thursday afternoon, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff.

It happened “within the last hour,” Sheriff Richard Fuller said around 4:10 p.m., in the parking lot of the Walmart store on 9th Street and M-43. Deputies arrived to find there had been an “altercation” where shots were fired. One person was injured and hospitalized, but it is unclear what that person’s condition is.

The suspect fled the scene, Fuller said, but with witnesses and people involved in the altercation stayed behind to speak with deputies. Thanks to witness accounts, the sheriff’s office has a suspect name and vehicle description and “may have found the vehicle already … we’re double-checking that right now,” Fuller said.

“We know the parties involved and it was a contained situation,” he added.

He said it is not an active situation and there is no threat to the public. The parties involved knew each other, Fuller said. It is not clear what led up to the altercation.
