Investigation launched after man dies in police custody

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Kalamazoo deputies say a man experienced a medical emergency while in custody and later died.

The man was arrested Wednesday by Portage police and taken to the Kalamazoo County jail for domestic violence-related charges, according to a Friday release from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.

During intake, deputies say the man became unresponsive because of a medical emergency. The sheriff’s office says emergency services were called and life-saving measures were started.

The man was then taken to the hospital, where he later died “as a result of his medical condition,” according to the sheriff’s office. His name was not released Friday.

Deputies say they have requested an independent review with the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association.
