The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has set up two new extension campuses for the Michigan Career and Technical Institute (MCTI). These campuses will offer vocational rehabilitation services to students in Kalamazoo and Livingston counties. The Northside Association will provide Certified Nurse Assistant training in Kalamazoo, and Torch 180 will offer culinary training in Fowlerville. This initiative is part of Michigan’s effort to boost labor force participation and support the middle class, especially among people with disabilities or illnesses.

Both the Northside Association and Torch 180 have received accreditation from the Council on Occupational Education. They will function as approved instructional service centers for MCTI, offering industry-recognized credentials. MCTI Director Jennifer Zuniga stated that the training programs will equip individuals with disabilities with the skills and experience needed for competitive employment.

The Northside Association is a non-profit organization that promotes a healthier environment, job creation, financial independence, safety, and neighborhood revitalization in Kalamazoo County. Its Executive Director, Elizabeth Washington, acknowledged the partnership with MCTI. Torch 180, a non-profit organization that provides food-industry training for adults with disabilities, is a partner of MCTI’s Culinary Training Program. Torch 180 President Rhonda Callahan commented on the accreditation, noting its importance for their programming.
