BCPD bodycam shows struggle before officer shot, man killed

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Body camera video shows a Battle Creek police officer struggling with a man and the sound of a gunshot as the officer was shot in the leg before another officer killed the man.

The video was released at a news conference Friday, the day after the shooting at a Battle Creek coffee shop.

During the news conference, Battle Creek Police Department Chief Shannon Bagley said before the shooting, police were called to Café Rica on E. Michigan Avenue around 9 a.m. Thursday for an “unwanted subject.” He was later identified as 29-year-old Dario Agudelo from San Antonio, Texas. When officers arrived, he left without incident.

Around 3 p.m., Agudelo was the suspect in a felonious assault at the W. K. Kellogg House, a museum in the area of Capital Avenue and W. Van Buren Street.

“We do not believe that the victim of that was in any way related or even knew him,” Bagley said.

While officers were looking for Agudelo for questioning, they were called to Café Rica on E. Michigan Avenue near Division Street around 3:30 p.m. due to concerns about a man’s behavior. An officer found Agudelo at a table and tried to detain him.
