Overnight house fire in Kalamazoo deemed ‘suspicious’

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Investigators with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety have labeled a house fire that sparked overnight “suspicious.”

First responders were sent to a home on West Lovell Street between Oak Street and Locust Street around 2 a.m. Thursday. As they arrived, the fire had already broken out of the first floor windows.

“A fire attack team and search/rescue teams were immediately deployed inside while a transitional attack was started from the outside,” KDPS Lt. Keaton Nielsen said in a statement. “The transitional attack was extremely successful and put out an overwhelming amount of the fire.”

Lt. Nielsen confirmed with News 8 that nobody was injured in the fire and the Red Cross has been called in to help the displaced residents.

KDPS did not detail the evidence they found to consider the fire suspicious but they are asking for tips. Anyone who knows something about the cause of this fire is encouraged to contact the Fire Marshal at 269.337.8260. Tips can also be sent anonymously through the Kalamazoo Silent Observer tip line at 269.343.2100, the “P3Tips” app or through the KSO website .
