Ohio Wesleyan the right spot for Centreville’s Wherrett

CENTREVILLE — When it comes to playing softball at the next level, Abbe Wherrett is ready to take the next step.

The Centreville graduate just wrapped up her final year, and summer, before she heads off to Ohio. Wherrett will continue her academic and softball careers with Ohio Wesleyan University later this season. The Battling Bishops have 24 varsity teams on campus, obviously including softball. Last year they finished with a record of 18-15-1.

Wherrett said the campus, which is located in the roughly 43,000-person Delaware, was a big draw for her as she ultimately made her decision on where to go post high school.

“I really like the campus, it seems like a great place and I like that it was far enough away from home so that I could be a little independent,” she said. “The people there are very nice, very accepting. I like that.”

Wherrett finished up her final season at Centreville prior to the summer. She is a catcher on the softball diamond but also said she could play in the outfield at the next level as well. As long as she gets an opportunity to compete for a spot and try to find a way to crack the lineup, she will accept the challenge.
