KDPS: Man found guilty of shooting, killing 19-year-old

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A man has been convicted of murder in the “tragic shooting” of a 19-year-old in Kalamazoo, police say.

A jury found Catrell Keyshawn Woods, 20, guilty of second-degree murder and felony firearm charges, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety announced Thursday.

KDPS: 19-year-old shot, not expected to survive

The shooting happened May 11, 2023 . Police responded to the area of Bridge Street and Gilbert Avenue for multiple reports of shots fired. Not long after, a 19-year-old who had been shot in the head arrived at the hospital “in grave condition,” according to KDPS. Police said the 19-year-old, later identified as Omar’re Brishon Williams-Dickey, did not survive .

On Thursday, KDPS said Woods’ conviction was “a significant step towards justice for Mr. Williams-Dickey and his family.”

“This conviction is a testament to the tireless efforts of our officers, detectives, and prosecutors,” said KDPS Capt. Danielle Guilds in a statement. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to investigating and prosecuting those responsible for gun violence in our community.”
