Hornets ‘did their assignments’ en route to county tournament title

CONSTANTINE — The Mendon volleyball team did not lose a set until the county tournament finals on Monday.

But after dropping that second set, 25-22 to Three Rivers, the Lady Hornets regained their composure and own in the third at 15-11. It secured the Hornets as the St. Joseph County champions on the volleyball court, de-throning the winners from last year in Three Rivers.

“We’re excited for the season, our girls are willing to put in the work in practice and it showed today,” Mendon coach Kenny Herbert said. “This was our first live action for the season and I thought we did a great job.”

Mendon came in replacing some graduated talent from last year. But Herbert said he was pleased with his rotation on Monday evening and said the future looks solid for this upcoming year.

He credited his team doing their jobs while also being amped up for the year as positives.

“They’re hungry and want to win. They’re willing to put in that extra work in the gym,” he said. “I thought our girls stepped up and did their assignments today. It was really good to see out of them.”
