WMU to receive $5 million for carbon capture research

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Western Michigan University will receive a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to continue improving ways to capture and store carbon dioxide.

The grant is a slice of a $44.5 million project aimed at advancing commercial scale carbon capture, pulling carbon dioxide from the air to lower the greenhouse gas effect and slow down the rate of climate change.

WMU is one of nine entities to work with the DOE, along with six other universities and two private companies, including Carbon Solutions LLC in Okemos.

Autumn Haagsma, the assistant director of the Michigan Geological Survey at WMU, believes they are a good fit for the DOE project.

“I’m really excited, and I think it’s important for Western Michigan University — as well as other universities — because carbon capture, utilization and storage requires a multidisciplinary approach, and who better than a university to lead that?” Haagsma said in a statement .
