Adult English language class enrollment skyrocketing for BISD

BRANCH COUNTY — The Branch Intermediate School District will close enrollment for its Adult Education program at the end of September to allow teachers to focus on instruction for the high demand English as a second language classes.

Superintendent Chris Jenkins told her board Wednesday that with classes starting Tuesday, over 70 students were enrolled for night classes at Coldwater High after three days.

The KCC Grahl Center enrolled over 60 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Jenkins said that the Michigan-Works! employment program has yet to start its enrollment.

Last year, BISD served 473 students in adult education.

Jenkins said of last year’s continuous open enrollment: “Our staff, that’s all they were doing all the time, was enrolling rather than working with the people there.”

The policy change ends waiting lists for classes.

Jenkins said that with fall enrollment ending in September, new students would need to wait until January to enroll in a new term.

The superintendent said, “We’re hoping that encourages people to attend on a more regular basis, knowing that they’re filling a slot that someone else isn’t getting.”
