Cameras, door sensors in newly-upgraded Comstock Middle School

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Comstock Public Schools celebrated the opening of a renovated middle school Wednesday.

Over the last four years, the district has been making renovations to convert one of its elementary schools into Comstock Middle School.

“I would term this the renovation, innovation and modernization of Comstock Elementary School. It was North Elementary and now it’s Comstock Middle School,” said Superintendent Jeffrey Thoenes.

A big focus for the district was on safety. Using 2022 bond money, CPS installed a modern, advanced camera system.

How Comstock schools are using safety grant

“Every room in the building and every hallway has a camera. We have the most camera coverage of any district in the county and we use that to good effect. It’s a great deterrent but it also helps us to diagnose something that did happen or something that did occur,” Thoenes said.

The district experienced a shooting outside of its high school last December. While no one was hurt after 30 gunshots were fired, the incident served as a reminder to the community just how important campus safety is.
