New ‘area of interest’ identified for PFAS contamination in Comstock Township

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan PFAS Action Response Team has identified a new “area of interest” in Kalamazoo County.

MPART says routine compliance monitoring has found elevated levels of PFAS at a business near the intersection of North 30th Street and East H Avenue in Comstock Township.

Kalamazoo’s former Cork Street Landfill declared PFAS contamination site

At least one individual test found up to 20 parts per trillion of PFOS — perfluorooctane sulfonic acid — which is above the state’s drinking water criteria of 16 parts per trillion but not enough to put the running annual average above the limit.

“Because no clear source could be identified, an investigation of the surrounding area began,” MPART said in a statement.

All homes and businesses in the area use private water wells. MPART plans to expand testing in the surrounding area, which will now include approximately 70 drinking wells.
