BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A house fire caused an estimated hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and killed a family’s pets in Battle Creek Tuesday morning, firefighters say.
The fire broke out around 6 a.m. at a single-family home on Lark Street at Maple Grove Avenue. All the people inside escaped without injury.
The Battle Creek Fire Department said by the time crews arrived, there was “heavy fire engulfing the first floor,” and it soon spread to the second floor.
Crews started spraying water on the house, but with the first and second floors damaged by the fire, they had a tough time getting to everywhere there were flames. They doused the fire eventually, but remained on scene for hours.
While no people were injured, firefighters said the family pets were killed in the fire. The fire department did not list how many animals or what kind.
In, all the fire department estimated $120,000 in property damage and $70,000 in damages to contents of the home.
The fire marshal is looking into the cause of the fire.
