Firefighters brave freezing conditions to ensure safety in West Michigan’s cold snap

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — This week’s arctic blast has been hard on everyone in West Michigan, and that includes firefighters.

No matter the weather conditions, they are typically some of the first people on the scene of an emergency. Most recently, West Michigan saw a series of fire departments dispatched to Calhoun County to put out a fire.

Tuesday wind chill of below-zero temperatures put firefighters to the test at the same time many agencies asked the public to stay indoors.

“In cold temperatures like this, when the firefighters stop and they have sweat underneath, once they lose the protection of that vapor barrier –they never get it back,” Fire Lieutenant Jason Hendrick with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said…
