16 departments battle strong winds to put out fire in Newaygo County

GRANT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Fire departments from 16 municipalities in West Michigan descended upon Grant Township Thursday night for a blaze at an excavating company.

Just after 7 p.m., flames broke out at Dan’s Excavating Services on 120th Street west of Sycamore Street in Grant Township, according to Dean Bouwkamp, Chief of the Ashland-Grant Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, the fire was “100% fully involved from one end of the building to the other,” Bouwkamp said. He knew they’d need some help.

“I knew it was going to take a lot of resources, we’re really lucky in Newaygo County and our adjacent counties with our mutual aid departments. We got help from eight departments in our county as well as eight departments outside of our county,” he said…
