Michigan set to see ice storm up north, severe weather down south this weekend

It’s going to be a wild weekend of weather across Michigan.

High temperatures are going to widely vary across the state on Friday, with the state border seeing temperatures in the low 70s while parts of the Upper Peninsula are set to see temperatures in the low 30s.

This difference in temperatures is a good indication of the varying weather that the state is set to see on the day as thunderstorms are expected in the southern region of the state while a large ice storm will impact the Upper Peninsula.

For those who may have plans in the Upper Peninsula this weekend, travel will be difficult as an impactful ice storm is set for the region. The Gaylord NWS has ice accumulation predictions of 0.25-0.5 inches for St. Ignace up to Sault Ste. Marie, with the potential for ice accumulations reaching as far south as Petoskey and Alpena.

The Michigan Storm Chasers predict travel to be heavily stymied because this system through Saturday.

Luckily, with the large temperature gradient, much of the winter weather will stay north for Friday’s system. But that may change on Saturday, as the Gaylord NWS puts much more of the Northern Lower Peninsula under ice accumulations for Saturday night into Sunday…
