Two years after mass fentanyl overdose, tide may be turning in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — It was a mass fentanyl overdose that came like a thunderclap for an entire community.

What happened in April 2023 still serves as a tragic example of how deadly and dangerous fentanyl can be. A drug dealer sold fentanyl disguised as cocaine : it led to eight overdose deaths in Kalamazoo County over the course of two days, plus 10 reported overdose in the city of Kalamazoo — and likely more that weren’t ever reported because someone administered an overdose reversal drug.

The events forced law enforcement to adopt new tactics in an effort to turn the tide. Now, two years later, law enforcement is pointing to results.

“You know, we had that we had the mass incident here in Kalamazoo, and we had a lot of death, a lot of overdoses,” said Capt. Michael Ferguson of the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team. “And that was all people who thought they were taking or using cocaine, when in fact it had fentanyl in it.”…
