BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Crews are working to reduce the levels of a harmful chemical group in the city of Battle Creek’s water system.
City of Battle Creek staff warned last month that levels of trihalomethanes — a harmful chemical group — were above safety standards. Crews with the City of Battle Creek Department of Public Works and state environmental staff are working together to reduce those levels in the municipal water system.
TTHM is a common byproduct created when chlorine — used to disinfect tap water — mixes with organic materials. Health officials say exposure over many years may affect the liver, kidneys or central nervous system, and can increase cancer risk.
