Portage schools acknowledge racial incidents, but seek lawsuit dismissal

PORTAGE, MI — The parents of two Portage Public Schools students sued the district in 2023, alleging their children encountered a “racially hostile” environment.

In new court documents, lawyers for the district acknowledge some events alleged in the lawsuit took place while some did not, asking the lawsuit be dismissed.

Adam Baylis III, father of the children referred to as “A.B.” and “G.B” because they are minors, and Nakia S. Baylis, their stepmother and legal guardian, filed the lawsuit in December 2024 in U.S. District Court in the Western District of Michigan…
