Security guard killed in Kalamazoo was gun violence prevention advocate

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Family is speaking out after their loved one, Montine Wiley, was tragically shot and killed Saturday evening.

Wiley was working as a security guard at a private event being held at Green Door Distilling on East North Street when he was shot in the chest after getting into an altercation with a patron, according to Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) officials.

KDPS is still searching for a potential suspect, who they say remains at large.

Taneka Dumas was in Lansing when she found out her son had been shot.

“I’m trying to remain calm because I know I’m so far away and I’m just praying and praying and praying,” Dumas, Wiley’s mother, said. “When I got the phone call that he was actually gone, I was numb, I’m still numb.”…
