‘You were not only my customers but many of you my friends,’ Artisan Sandwich closed down

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A sandwich shop is closed down after eight years in business.

Artisan Sandwich Company, located on the Kalamazoo Mall for the past eight years, closed down for good Saturday, posting a note on their door saying they’re “out of everything” and that it would be their last day open.

“First I want to thank you all for an amazing eight years of business,” shop owner Ryan Schmidt wrote in the note. “We are making a personal decision for our young family to close this door in the downtown chapter and focus on our growing family…you were not only my customers but many of you my friends. I am forever grateful for the time and experience downtown Kalamazoo offered. Thank you!”

The shop was open through the “revitalization of the Kalamazoo Mall,” the COVID-19 pandemic, and riots, Schmidt said in the note, and through the ups and downs they remained open to serve an “amazing lunch at a good price.”

“I hope you all have enjoyed me, my space and the food we served,” Schmidt said in the note.

Created by two Western Michigan University graduates, the Artisan Sandwich Company maintained a passion for “great food and ever better customer service” since their beginning eight years ago…
