Orange Overload: Estate Sale For Kalamazoo Legend

Everyone wants to leave behind a legacy and for some of us, that legacy doesn’t always play out the way we would like it to but for others can be honored to say they left behind an amazing story. We all leave behind something for everyone else to remember us by but it’s up to us as individuals to decide if it’ll be good or bad.

When you think of Michigan, there are tons of great legacies that come to mind like Jimmy Carter, Sojourner Truth, and Henry T Ford among many others. On the flip side there are some unfortunate legacies as well like Kwame Kilpatrick, Carl Eugene Watts, and many others. Kalamazoo is lucky enough to be home to a legend that left behind an unreal legacy.

Gene The Pumpkin Man had called Kalamazoo home for decades and there aren’t too many people in the area that will say they don’t know who he is. For years, Gene would provide thousands of people with orange gourds from his far every year, which would become a Halloween tradition for many families.

Gene was known for his love of pumpkins and the color orange and believe it or not, this wasn’t the only color on his farm even though 90% of it was orange. Unfortunately, we lost Gene in December of 2024 at 88 years old but his love for the Southwest Michigan community lives on forever…
