BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Battle Creek Public Schools’ alternative high school will be restructured and moved into another school building after a vote by the district’s board of education Monday night.
During last week’s meeting, the district’s assistant superintendent said the move of W.K. Kellogg Preparatory High School could save nearly a million dollars. Some teachers, parents, and students brought their concerns to the board this week.
“I really do think WK is a better school for me to, like, to move on and to stay moving on. It’s because all I ever wanted is a good school to teach me and help me learn,” said Hope, a W.K. Kellogg Preparatory High School student.
Declining enrollment is contributing to West Michigan school closings
The restructuring would bring the alternative school program out of its own building and into Battle Creek Central High School. The plan aims to optimize resources while having a program with a “sustainable financial future.” The program would be housed as a school-within-a-school model. The preparatory high school building and the auditorium would remain. Some teachers are expected to be transferred to vacancies that have been held by long-term substitute teachers…
