Expansion project along West Main Street in Kalamazoo leads to gridlock, backups

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — About 45,000 cars pass through the intersection of Drake Road and West Main Street (M-43) in Kalamazoo daily, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

But, an expansion project along M-43 that kicked off in March has recently left a number of those drivers stuck in backups.

The project, led by MDOT, is adding a new right turn lane between Drake Road and US-131, along with removing the southbound US-131 exit loop, and expanding the ramp to westbound West Main Street, according to officials…
