Suspicious fire fought for over 10 hours leaves local grocery store damaged

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Crews battled a grocery store fire for over 10 hours Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Pennfield Township Fire Department, Emmett Township Department of Public Safety Fire Division and Bedford Charter Township Fire Department were battling a fire at Bailey Park Thriftway until 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

The fire was difficult to control because the store’s new roof was built over the top of the old roof and the fire was caught between the two, Pennfield Fire Chief Jeff Bammer said.

Only an hour earlier, Pennfield Township Fire Department had responded to an explosion and dumpster fire at the same location, according to Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office officials. They were able to put it out quickly without incident…
