Suspect, victim identified in deadly Kalamazoo shooting

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Police have identified both the victim and suspect in a deadly Kalamazoo shooting last week.

Police found Michael Richard Powers, 42, with gunshot wounds to his head and abdomen near Riverview Drive and E. Paterson Street in Kalamazoo around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after officers were alerted to the shooting, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. He was taken to the hospital where he died hours later.

The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Anthony Shawn-Tyrone Thomas. He was arrested Sunday and charged Monday with open murder, carrying a concealed weapon and other weapons charges. He was denied bond, KDPS said.
