Authorities ID 3 juvenile suspects in fire that destroyed market

PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities confirm they are pursuing charges against three juveniles in a fire that destroyed a neighborhood grocery store near Battle Creek.

“Three juvenile suspects have been identified,” Amber Coco, the communications director for Calhoun County, wrote in an email to News 8. “A warrant request is being submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office for review.”

There were two fires at Bailey Park Thriftway on Capital Avenue near Eaton Street in Pennfield Township on May 31, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said. Around 6:30 p.m., firefighters were sent to a report of an explosion and dumpster fire. They quickly doused it and left. Then, around 7:20 p.m., they were called again to the market because the building was on fire.

Multiple departments were called in to help fight the fire, and crews stayed on scene for more than 10 hours. The flames destroyed the building, leaving a hole in the roof and siding melted away.

The sheriff’s office previously said it got a tip that kids were playing with fireworks nearby. Deputies said they had identified the people in question…
