Kalamazoo nonprofit looks to curb violence with summer camp

AUGUSTA, Mich. (WOOD) — Along the shores of Sherman Lake, Kalamazoo area middle schools bring a canoe to the water’s edge. At another part of the camp, children learn the basics of archery.

After lunch, they’ll learn the risks of drug use. This isn’t any summer camp —  it’s the Urban Alliance’s two-day life camp.

Hosted at Sherman Lake YMCA Outdoor Center, facilitators work to teach lessons in leadership, advocacy and encouragement. It’s also creating an important space around the issue of community violence, said Summer Camp Facilitator James Harris…
