Schoolcraft 4th of July parade canceled for lack of police officers

SCHOOLCRAFT, Mich. (WOOD) — The Fourth of July parade in Schoolcraft has been canceled because the village says there’s not enough police to staff it.

Schoolcraft needs officers to manage crowd control and ensure public safety but there aren’t enough officers, the village council decided at a special meeting held Wednesday. Schoolcraft normally relies on nearby towns and Kalamazoo County to help staff police for the event because it must reroute traffic from US-131.

“After extensive discussions with local law enforcement and emergency services, it became clear that staffing constraints would make it difficult to maintain the level of safety our residents expect and deserve during high-attendance events,” Schoolcraft wrote in a Wednesday release…
